Other requirements
Pennsylvania's new Intern Certificate became effective July 1, 2011 with the passage of Act 24 of 2011. Act 24 specified that the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education may make a one-time issuance of an Intern Certificate for service in a specific area of instruction when an applicant meets all of the following:
(1) Satisfies requirements of Section 1209 of the Pennsylvania School Code;
(2) Holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university;
(3) Is continuously enrolled in an approved Intern Program; and
(4) Presents evidence of satisfactory achievement on the Pennsylvania Department of Education's prescribed subject matter assessments related to the area of certification.
The new legislation required the Pennsylvania Department of Education to develop guidelines for the approval of flexible and accelerated pedagogical training to teachers who have demonstrated subject matter competency in a subject area related to their certificate.
Program providers will not be limited to institutions of higher education.
Guidelines were developed and approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
