Grade or subject limits

Restricted License is limited to middle level/secondary level subject content areas and certain all level subject content areas (music, foreign language, art, physical education).

Shortage design

The alternative pathway license was designed in order for individuals with a BA/BS degree or higher degree and major or equivalent in a content area to have immediate access to practice. Heritage language speakers with a bachelor’s degree or higher can also utilize the restricted licensure to teach their native languages. Pedagogy course requirements are a condition of the restricted license and must be completed. Shortage areas such as math, the sciences, and foreign languages certainly are applicable, as are many other content areas.

Credential issued

The Restricted Teaching License is issued to candidates teaching at minimum of half-time in their content area while completing the requirements of the approved restricted licensure program. Once he/she completes the program, the candidate is issued a standard teaching license (the same standard license that traditional candidates would receive).

Clinical experience

Although there is immediate access to practice, Kansas regulation specifically requires a supervised practical training experience prior to their entrance to a classroom and continuous supervision of the restricted license holder’s teaching by higher education faculty, and all approved restricted license programs include credit hours in supervised internships each semester during the program. The Restricted License applicants are supervised during teaching, observed and mentored under the license.

Other requirements

The Restricted License Alternative route requires a performance assessment, a cumulative GPA of 2.75 from the most recent 60 college credit hours completed at the time of program entrance and throughout the duration of the program, successful performance on content tests, completion of approved professional education program and a progress report verification that the candidate made appropriate progress during the first year. The license is issued for one school year, and progress must be made in order to apply for the license for subsequent school year(s).
