Grade or subject limits
The LTAP offers a combined program leading to Elementary Education PreK-6 and/or Early Childhood Unified Birth to Grade 3 licenses. The program is only available from Wichita State University.
Shortage design
The program produces candidates prepared to work with both general education PreK-6 and special education students at the Birth to Grade 3 level for Special Education. This is a critical shortage area. These are ideal candidates to serve in the geographic shortage areas in Kansas that need teachers for both fields.
Credential issued
Kansas Limited Teacher Apprentice Program License (LTAP) is a State Board approved innovative pathway designed to allow applicant access to practice after completing a prescribed portion of the program. The program is a combined program leading to an Elementary Education PreK-6 and/or Early Childhood Unified Birth to Grade 3 license. The program accepts non-degreed candidates who start through the program and can be issued the license after completing a minimum of 60 credit hours and a full year of program coursework. The degree plan uses an inverse structure with the professional ed courses delivered first, followed by any general/degree coursework requirements. Degreed candidates can be issued the license after completing a full semester of program coursework. Degreed candidates complete only the professional education requirements. License holders can be assigned as a teacher upon receiving the license.
Clinical experience
The program includes supervised internships and the university continues to supervise the candidate after they receive the license, during program completion.
Other requirements
The program must be completed within the two years of the license. A mentor teacher must be assigned. The IHE is required to provide supervision. Collaborative support is provided by the IHE and the employing school district. The licensure tests are required at the end of the program, prior to upgrading to a standard license. Program candidates can choose to take either or both sets of licensure tests for Elementary Education PreK-6 and/or Early Childhood Unified Birth to Grade 3. The standard license will reflect which tests were completed.
