Shortage design
Even though the emphasis is on critical shortage areas, the program is available for early childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education candidates.
Credential issued
An Alternative Teaching Certificate will be issued. If the candidate has passed the appropriate Arizona Teacher Proficiency Assessment or has met the subject knowledge requirement in another way, the subject area/level will be denoted on the Alternative Teaching Certificate.
Clinical experience
The university is required to supervise the teaching intern candidates and the LEA is required to provide support for the teaching intern.
Other requirements
If the candidate teaches in a Structured English Immersion classroom the candidate must hold a valid Structured English Immersion, an English as a Second Language, or a Bilingual Endorsement.
Early childhood and Elementary candidates must complete coursework/approved trainings in the following areas:
• Research-based instructional strategies for delivering differentiated reading instruction, assessment, intervention and remediation to support readers of varying ages and ability levels, including students with dyslexia;
• The science of reading, including systematic phonics instruction.
All program completers must complete a course or Board-approved training in professional responsibility and ethical conduct.
