Special Education

Shortage design

Special education is identified as one of the shortage areas.

Credential issued

The Alternative Teaching Certificate valid for one year is issued to those who qualify. The Alternative Teaching Certificate may be renewed twice as long a adequate progress is being made by the alternative certification candidate.

Clinical experience

Since employment is required, clinical experience is ongoing.

Other requirements

At the completion of the AC Program, a candidate, upon meeting all required criteria, may apply for a "provisional" professional (non-transferable) teaching certificate renewable yearly. After the applicant has held the provisional certificate in the endorsement area for at least 2 years, and they have had satisfactory performance and met all other criteria, they may apply to convert their provisional teaching certificate into an initial professional teaching certificate.
