Shortage design

HIDOE middle and high schools have incorporated the CTE pathways as electives for their schools. Programs have been in jeopardy of closing due to the lack of licensed teachers in the content line. The Alternative CTE program is addressing this need.

Special Education is consistently a high-needs area in the State of Hawaii.

Credential issued

Upon successful completion of coursework and the practicum experience (O&P and Student Teaching), candidates are recommended for licenses in CTE or Special Education.

The candidates who enter with a bachelor’s degree are recommended for a standard CTE license (6-12) in the content field; Candidates entering with an Associate degree and a minimum of 3 years of industry experience are recommended for a restricted CTE license (6-12) in the content.

Candidates entering the Special Education program are required to have an undergraduate degree. Knowledge and skill needed as a Special Education teacher are provided and practiced in the program.

Clinical experience

Candidates complete two semesters of practicum. The second semester of clinical practice is the supervised Student Teaching experience.

Other requirements

Candidates will complete fingerprinting/background check prior to their two semesters of practicum.
